DHAKA, June 2, 2021 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered suspension of Sylhet’s Murari Chand (MC) College principal and hostel superintendent for their negligence over a gang-rape of a housewife on the college premises.

A High Court Division Bench comprising Justice Mohammad Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohammad Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order.

Advocate Mohammad Misbah Uddin appeared in the court as the writ petitioner. Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Mohammad Russell Chowdhury represented the State.

Earlier on September 29 last year, the court issued a rule asking why disciplinary action would not be taken against the college authorities for their negligence resulting in the gang-rape incident.

The HC also constituted a joint probe committee comprising Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Bazlur Rahman, Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Mominun Nesa, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Abul Kashem and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Sharmin Sultana to enquire about the gang-rape case.

The committee later submitted a report to the HC alleging that the hostel superintendent and guards were found negligent in fulfilling their official duties.
Moreover, the report stated that as the former students illegally occupied the seats of the college hostel and one of the former students named Saifur Rahman forcibly occupied the Hostel Super’s residence, so it gave them courage to commit such a heinous crime in the college hostel area.

The report also said that the responsibility also falls on the principal of the college as he is the head of the institution.

It placed 15 recommendations including allotting seats of hostels to the regular college students based on their needs, strictly prohibiting non-students or alumni from staying in hostels to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Earlier, Advocate Md Meshbah Uddin brought an article, published in the newspaper, to the attention of the HC, seeking action against the indifferent behavior and negligence of the MC College authorities.
