SC rejects bail of Rashedul Hoq Chisti

DHAKA, June 1, 2021 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today rejected a plea for bail of Rashedul Hoq Chisti, former director of Farmers Bank, in a case lodged over alleged embezzlement and laundering abroad around Taka 160 crore.

An Appellate Division full bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after holding a virtual hearing on the matter.

The High Court on January 26 upheld bail of Rashedul, son of former audit committee chairman of Farmers’ Bank Mahbubul Hoq Chisti, making the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to file an appeal with the apex court.

The Appellate Division after that stayed Rashedul’s bail on February 1 and asked him to file a leave to appeal petition. The court today came up with the order after holding a hearing on that leave to appeal plea and ACC petition against the High Court bail order.

Senior lawyer AF Hasan Arrif argued for Rashedul, while Khurshid Alam Khan moved the case for the ACC. Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed stood before the court for the state.

The anti-graft body filed the case on April 10, 2018, against Mahbubul Hoq Chisti alias Babul Chishti, his wife Rosy Chishti, son Rashedul Hoq Chishti, former senior vice president of Farmers’ Bank Zia Uddin Ahmed and former first president of the bank Mohammad Masudur Rahman Khan.
