Modern waste cleaning machines are being imported to eradicate Aedes larvae: Tajul

DHAKA, May 27, 2021 (BSS) – Local Government, Rural Development
(LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam has said that modern
machines are being brought from Germany to remove water hyacinth and
floating debris in canals and ponds from of all city corporations,
including Dhaka to eradicate Aedes mosquitoes and larvae.

“These machines are in operation in many countries of the world
including China, Japan, Korea and Britain. It is capable of removing
floating matters including water hyacinth and even debris one meter
below the water,” he said.

He made the remarks while addressing an online inter-ministerial
meeting on Aedes mosquito eradication and dengue prevention today,
said an official press release.

Referring to the current period as the high time for the breeding of
Aedes mosquitoes, Tajul said, “Aedes mosquitoes grow in clean water,
so do not let clean water to stay anywhere near your surroundings.
Keep your areas clean.”

He said that there are adequate stocks of pesticides, especially
adulticides and larvicides, which are essential for the eradication of
Aedes mosquitoes. In addition, adequate fogging machines and trained
manpower are also ready to this end, he said.

“An executive magistrate has been appointed in the city corporation
to run the mobile court in case of non-compliance with government
directives. All effective measures have been taken to protect the city
dwellers from mosquito infestation,” he added.

Urging the city dwellers to become aware and conscious, the local
government minister said, “The city corporation was established by a
law and there is a provision to take legal action against any person
or organization if this law is violated. The City Corporation has the
right to take legal action against anyone who acts against the
interests of the country and the people.”

The minister said legal action would be taken against any person or
organization if they do not abide by the decisions taken to eradicate
Aedes mosquitoes and prevent dengue infection.

The meeting was attended by the mayors of Dhaka North and South City
Corporation, Khulna and Chittagong City Corporation, senior
secretaries and senior officials of the local government department,
SDG affairs coordinator of the Prime Minister’s Office and WASA MD,
among others.
