36 villages inundated due to cyclone Yaas in Bhola

BHOLA, May 26, 2021 (BSS) – At least 36 low-lying villages have been inundated and around 15,000 people are suffering from water logging as the rivers were flowing above danger levels due to super cyclone Yaas.

“Many people in these low-lying areas were left marooned,” said Md Abdur Rashid, deputy director of the district cyclone preparedness program, adding a total of 13,000 volunteers are working in the areas in order to mitigate the sufferings of affected people.

However, no major damage has been reported so far, he said.

The affected areas include Ramaspur, Kachia, Rajapur, Veduria and East Ilisha under Sadar upazila, Baro Manika and Hasan Nagar under Borhanuddin upazila, Char Tobgi, Char Medua, Madanpur, Hajipur, Bhabanipur, Syedpur and Charpata under Daulatkhan upazila and Chachra and Chandpur under Tajumuddin upazila.

Charfashion Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ruhul Amin said water has entered into the area due to tidal surge.

“About 6,000 vulnerable people have been evacuated and brought to safer places where they are being provided with dry food and Khichuri,” he said.

Abdus Salam Hawlader, chairman of Dhalchar Union Parishad of Charfashion Upazila, said river water is flowing above 3 to 4 feet higher than normal.

A total of 8 medical teams have been formed in the district to help submerged people, said sources at district administration.
