Expansion of kawon cultivation brings more profit to Narsingdi farmers

NARSINGDI, May 23, 2021 (BSS)- Expanding cultivation of Kawon rice, a kind of food crop as an additional cash crop, has brought more profit to the farmers of the district side by side meeting local rice demand.

Farmers of the char areas of Magna river in Narsingdi Sadar upazila and Haridoa river in Belabo upazila have taken up a massive programme for farming of Kawon rice this season to overcome food deficit of the district.

The rice is usually used to make cake and payesh which is known as tasty food to the villagers and the town people also.

Besides, most of the char people here also use Kawon as their main food (rice).

Farmers with the help of local Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office cultivated Kawon rice around 500 hectares of land in different char areas under Narsingdi Sadar upazila and 300 hectares of land in different char areas under Belabo upazila this current Rabi season, the office sources said.

Earlier, the DAE has set up a number of demonstration plots of the crop for disseminating updated Kawon cultivation knowledge and technology among the common farmers.
