DHAKA, May 19, 2021 (BSS) – State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said the government has been encouraging power generation from renewable sources.

“It is necessary to innovate such a technology that would occupy less land to generate solar power,” he said while witnessing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing as the chief guest at a virtual plat form for 100-MW solar power plant at Sonagazi, Fenni.

The state minister said it is necessary to introduce mixed fuel in power generation, adding, “Developed countries have been working with hydrogen for transforming as energy. It’s time to rethink ocean energy, wind power and rooftop solar.”

Nasrul said necessary finance will be arranged for research works to this end.

Secretary of EGCB Kazi Nazrul Islam and General Manager of Marubeni, Japan, Hiroki Goto signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides.

As a power generation company, the EGCB has a total generating capacity of 954 MW.

Chaired by power secretary Md Habibur Rahman, the virtual programme was also addressed, among others, by Japanese Ambassador in Dhaka Ito Naoki, Chairman of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Engineer Belayed Hossain, Chairman of EGCB Engineer Sheikh Faizul Amin, Managing Director of EGCB Arun Kumar Saha and Managing Director of Marubeni, Asia Power Bangladesh Ltd Sawada Mitsuru.

The government has undertaken various initiatives to increase renewable energy ratio in the power energy sector.

Currently, the renewable energy installation capacity is 730.32 MW under the guideline of the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), of which 496.39 MW come from solar power.
