COVID-19 cases cross 52,000 mark in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, May 19, 2021 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases crossed 52,000 mark in Chattogram district where the infection rate continues rising again in recent weeks.

Health officials said the number of Covid-19 cases speedily raised to 52,023 as 126 more people were reported Covid-19 positive after testing 1,139 samples with the daily infection rate of 11.06 percent on Tuesday in the district.

“The infection rate is showing a quick rising trend again and recovery rate is declining continuously here in recent weeks,” Focal Person of COVID-19 Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi, civil surgeon of Chattogram, told BSS today.

The health experts of Chattogram urged city dwellers again and again to strictly follow health rules and use masks.

Among the newly detected patients, 88 are from Chattogram city and 38 from different upazilas of the district, hospital sources said.

With one more death on Tuesday, the number of coronavirus (COVID-19) deaths in Chattogram reached 588, Dr Rabbi added.

Among the reported fatalities, 431 were the residents of the port city and the rest 157 were from different upazilas of the district.

Of the total infected people, 41,610 are the residents of the port city and the rest 10,413 are the inhabitants of different upazilas of the district, said the health official.

“The number of cured patients from the lethal virus infection has reached 38,352 in the Chattogram district with the recovery of 135 more patients on Tuesday,” Dr Rabbi said, adding that the percentage of recovery rate stands at 73.75.

A total of 5,426 infected patients are now undergoing treatment at designated hospitals here, he mentioned.
