NEW DELHI, May 18, 2021 (BSS) – As experts caution that India may see a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requested the central government to take pre-cautionary measurers immediately to contain the spread of a new Covid variant detected in Singapore.

The new variant of coronavirus detected in Singapore is proving extremely dangerous for children, he tweeted in Hindi today. His tweet comes amid concerns being raised over a third wave, which many experts said is likely to target children.

In this connection, Kejriwal suggested the central government should suspend air services to and from Singapore on urgent basis and working out for developing vaccines to protect the children.

Earlier, experts cautioned that the first wave has affected the elderly the most and the younger people have been infected in the second wave.

“There is a possibility that the third wave virus will predominantly target the children, mainly because adults are either infected or immunised,” media reports quoted cardiac surgeon and chief of Narayana Health, Dr Devi Shetty as saying.

Besides, government’s Principal Scientific Adviser K Vijay Raghavan has warned that a third wave is “inevitable” and suggested that vaccines need to be “updated” to deal with the emerging strains.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Dr Randeep Guleria said on Tuesday that India may see a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic if the virus continues to evolve further and develops an immune escape mechanism.

He rejected the night curfews and weekend lockdowns that some states have imposed to bring down the Covid-19 cases, saying they hardly work.
