Covid-19 cases reach 18,381 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, May 18, 2021 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases reached 18,381 in Rangpur division where the daily infection rate started rising again and crossed the 10 mark during the past couple of days.

Health officials said the number of Covid-19 cases rose to 18,381 as 35 more patients were reported after testing 195 samples at the infection rate of 17.95 percent on Monday in the division.

“The daily infection rate in the division crossed the 10 percent mark on March 24 last for the first time since December 26 last,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS.

Later, the daily infection rate came down below 10 percent mark and remained mostly steady for more than one month and again crossed the 10 percent mark from May 16 last in the division.

“The district-wise break-up of 18,381 patients now stands at 4,799 in Rangpur, 833 in Panchagarh, 1,555 in Nilphamari, 1,053 in Lalmonirhat, 1,181 in Kurigram, 1,653 in Thakurgaon, 5,576 in Dinajpur and 1,731 in Gaibandha,” he said.

Since the beginning, a total of 1,29,030 collected samples were tested in the division till Monday, and of them, 18,341 were found Covid-19 positive with an average infection rate of 14.26 percent.

At the same time, the total number of healed patients reached 17,390 with recovery of 37 more patients on Monday at the average recovery rate of 94.61 percent.

Among the total recovered patients, 4,493 of Rangpur, 807 of Panchagarh, 1,497 of Nilphamari, 1,025 of Lalmonirhat, 1,021 of Kurigram, 1,550 of Thakurgaon, 5,312 of Dinajpur and 1,685 of Gaibandha districts.

Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Ahad Ali said the number of fatalities rose to 369 while one more death case reported from Rangpur in the division on Monday.

The district-wise break-up of the total fatalities now stands at 87 in Rangpur, 136 in Dinajpur, 38 in Thakurgaon, 35 in Nilphamari, 19 in Kurigram, 20 in Panchagarh, 21 in Gaibandha and 13 in Lalmonirhat.

The average casualty rate currently stands at 2.01 percent, which is the highest average fatality rate in the division since the beginning of the pandemic.

Among the 18,381 infected patients, 50 are undergoing treatments at isolation units, including 18 at ICU beds and eight at High Dependency Unit beds, after recovery of 17,390 people and 369 deaths while 595 are remaining in home isolation.

“Meanwhile, the number of citizens who got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine remained steady at 5,96,952 since April 26 last, and among them, 3,36,241 got the second dose till Monday last in the division,” Dr Ali added.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu has suggested people to strictly abide by the health directives to contain the rising infection rate.
