Coronavirus: 18,323 infected, 17,295 cured in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, May 16, 2021 (BSS) – A total of 18,323 people have been infected with coronavirus (COVID-19), and of them, 17,295 cured in all eight districts of the division.

Health officials said the number of Covid-19 cases reached 18,323 as nine more patients were reported after testing 104 samples at the infection rate of 8.65 percent on Saturday in the division.

Earlier, the daily infection rate crossed 0 percent mark on March 24 last for the first time after remaining below the five percent mark for over a month previously.

“The daily infection rate is fluctuating between eight percent and 10 percent in recent days in the division,” said Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, a total of 1,28,718 collected samples of the division were tested till Saturday, and of them, 18,323 people were found coronavirus positive with an average infection rate of 14.23 percent.

“The district-wise break-up of 18,323 infected patients now stands at 4,784 in Rangpur, 832 in Panchagarh, 1,552 in Nilphamari, 1,049 in Lalmonirhat, 1,177 in Kurigram, 1,651 in Thakurgaon, 5,550 in Dinajpur and 1,728 in Gaibandha,” he said.

Meanwhile, the number of recovered patients rose to 17,295 with the healing of 13 more infected people on Saturday in the division at the average recovery rate of 94.39 percent.

Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Ahad Ali today told BSS that the Covid-19 related death toll remained steady at 368 as no more death case was reported from the division during the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today.

A total of 48 infected patients died from April 10 to May 16 last, the highest number of deaths in the last 36 days, in the division since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The district-wise break-up of the total fatalities now stands at 86 in Rangpur, 136 in Dinajpur, 38 in Thakurgaon, 35 in Nilphamari, 19 in Kurigram, 20 in Panchagarh, 21 in Gaibandha and 13 in Lalmonirhat.

The average casualty rate currently stands at 2.01 percent in the division.
Among the 18,323 patients, 46 are undergoing treatments at isolation units, including 16 at ICU beds and two at High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds, after recovery of 17,295 people and 368 deaths while 636 are remaining in home isolation in the division.

“Meanwhile, the number of citizens who got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine remained steady at 5,96,952 since April 26 last, and among them, 3,22,726 got the second dose till Wednesday last in the division,” Dr Ali added.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu said common people should properly abide by the health directives to control further spread of the lethal virus.
