Shoppers rushing to Khulna markets defying health guidelines

KHULNA, May 12, 2021 (BSS) – Despite warning from experts of pandemic Coronavirus, Eid shoppers are crowding city shopping malls and roadside vendors defying health guidelines.

Shops, shopping centres and different markets of Khulna city are witnessing mad rush of shoppers today as Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, is near at hand.

People from the city and adjacent areas are rushing to the markets not only to buy dresses, shoes, cosmetics and ornaments but also items of delicacies for the Eid day.

The rush of customers at the shopping venues that started in the morning is still running defying the health guidelines.

Most of the customers especially women are moving from shop to shop to select their dresses such as shari and three piece.

As a result, different roads of the city are experiencing severe traffic congestion. Besides, women and girls of affluent families are rushing to the beauty parlours while the affluent and fashionable males are rushing to the costly salons.

The sales in the footpaths and makeshift cosmetics shops at different places of the city have geared up, said Imrul Hasan, a footpath vendor in Dakbangalow area under Sadar upazila.

Expressing satisfaction, he said, “I am happy with the sales.”

Though the prices of dresses and other goods in the markets are higher compared to previous years, the sales are satisfactory, said shopkeepers.

The wealthy section who are in search of latest fashion in design are crowding shopping malls like the posh Biponi Bitan (KDA New Market), Safe n Save, Western Plaza, Darji Bari, Cats I, Jalil Tower, Khulna Shopping Complex, Akhter Chember, Hazi Malek Chember, Esha Chamber, Darbesh Chamber and Meena Bazar in the city.

People of low-income group are rushing to Khanjahan Ali Hawker’s Market, Moshiur Rahman Market, Shohrawardi Hawker’s Market, SMA Rob Shopping Complex, Railway Biponi Bitan, Nixon Market, Khalishpur, Daulatpur market and footpaths for Eid shopping.

Besides, shoppers are rushing to the grocers’ shops near their residences and different big markets like Boro Bazaar, Helatola, West Mekot Road, Daulatpur Bazaar, Gallamari, Nirala Bazaar and Rupsha Bazaar.

Md Hamidul Haque, salesman of imitation ornament shop Pritom Enterprise at Haji Malek Chamber, told the news agency that they were getting huge buyers and the sales were satisfactory.

Gopal Krisna Debnath, a grocer at the city’s Borobazaar area, talking to BSS, said they were busy with providing goods to the buyers and had engaged extra manpower to provide goods to the shoppers.

“I am completing my last-minute shopping today (Wednesday) while there is only one day before Eid,” said a private job holder Mozammel Haque Milon, 36, of the city’s Sonadanga Road.

He, however, observed that prices of all the items he bought had gone up compared to last year.

The authorities have taken adequate measures in maintaining law and order in order to help shoppers buying without fear.

Police, members of RAB and intelligence personnel both in uniforms and plain clothes are patrolling the city. As a result incidents’ of mugging, burglary, extortion and other crimes rate is close to zero.

Besides, the authorities and owners of the business establishments have taken their own security measures to ensure a peaceful atmosphere.
