Prioritizing health, social security and education recommended in next budget

DHAKA,May 11, 2021(BSS)- Economists and experts have recommended prioritizing health, education, agriculture and social security programs in the budget for the next fiscal year.

They said this at a pre -budget discussion organized by the Center on Budget and Policy of Dhaka University on Tuesday.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman attended the discussion as chief guest.

Presided over by the Treasurer of the University Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed, the discussion was addressed by former advisor to the caretaker government Rasheda K Chowdhury, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Sadeka Halim, General Secretary of the Teachers Association. Md. Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan and the executive director of the private research organization SANEM Dr. Selim Raihan.

Teachers of the Department of Development Studies Professor Dr. Abu Yusuf and Dr. Kazi Maruful Islam presented two separate papers at the seminar.

Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said the Prime Minister is providing a grant of TK 2,500 to alleviate the sufferings of marginalized people of the country during the Covid-19 pandemic .

He called upon the affluent people of the society to join this initiative of the Prime Minister and said that 35 lakh people are being assisted from the Prime Minister’s fund.

Now the rich people of the society should follow the initiative of the Prime Minister and also stand beside the poor and distressed people, he added.

Rasheda K Chowdhury said that the education sector should not be neglected in any way during the pandemic.

The students have already lagged far behind as the educational institutions remained closed for long .

To overcome this loss, she recommended for formulation of a separate budget for the education sector in the next fiscal year.

Dr. Selim Raihan in his speech emphasized the need for increasing the budget implementation capacity.
