32 water bodies’ re-excavation works near completion in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, May 11, 2021 (BSS) – The re-excavation works of 5 beels and 27 ponds here are nearing completion.

Department of Fisheries of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is implementing the work under “Enhancement of Fish Production through Restoration of Water Bodies Project” involving TK 3.25 crore.

The objectives of the re-excavation work of the beels are to remove the stagnant water from those during rainy season, increase indigenous fish production, and create employment opportunities.

Another aims of the beels’ re-excavation are to protect the biodiversity and help the farmers grow various agri crops through using its water.

On the other hand, the purpose of the re-excavation of the ponds is to meet the demand of protein through increasing fish production at farmers’ level.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin said due to siltation and gradual encroachment, the beels almost dried up.

With the re-excavation of the beels, the local people would get more benefit from those, he said.

District fisheries officer (DFO) Abdud Dayan Dulu said the re-excavation of the beels would bring a radical change in the fisheries and agriculture sectors through enhancing agri and fish production.

He said additional 40 metric tons of fishes would be produced from the beels and the ponds per year through re-excavating the dried water bodies.
