Hefajat leader Fakhrul sent to jail in Paltan mayhem case

DHAKA, May 08, 2021 (BSS) – A court here today sent former publicity secretary of Dhaka City unit of Hefajat-e-Islam Mufti Fakhrul Islam to jail in a case lodged over the organisation’s 2013 mayhem in and around the capital’s Paltan area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yasmin Ara passed the order as police produced Fakhrul before the court after end of his four-day remand and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the conclusion of the probe in the case.

Earlier, he was placed on the four-day remand by the court on April 26 in the case.

A team of Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Fakhrul from the capital’s Lalbagh area on April 14.

Hefajat-e-Islam laid seize on capital’s Shapla Chattar area on May 5, 2013, unleashing inexpressible atrocities in and around the capital.

They vandalized hundreds of vehicles, shops and offices, setting many of those on fire. They even cut down hundreds of trees grown on the road dividers and used those as barricades to obstruct the law enforcing agencies’ approach.
