Tajul emphasizes on development, modernization of villages

DHAKA, Mar 05, 2021, (BSS) – Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD), Md Tajul Islam today said that not only cities but also villages need to be planned in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

“The government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working to extend all the facilities of the city to the remote rural areas. The worthy successor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina has taken a visionary project- ‘Amar Gram, Amar Sohor’ to develop and modernize the villages in a planned manner,” Tajul said while speaking as the chief guest at a virtual meeting on ‘Mayor’s Dialogue: Safe, Sustainable and Inclusive Cities’ here, said a release.

The meeting was organized jointly by ‘Save the Children’ and ‘Bangladesh Institute of Planners’.

“If anyone wants to build any infrastructure in the village, including houses, shops, mosques, madrasas, educational institutions, hospitals, offices or courts, then permission must be obtained from the appropriate authority,” the minister said.

Saying that unplanned construction of infrastructure in the village is not a thing to be controlled by a single or specific authority, he said, “The Union Parishads and the Upazila Parishads will also have power in this regard.”

Mentioning that strict action will be taken against anyone who abuses power the minister said, “Under no circumstances shall houses or any other institution or establishment be allowed to be built on agricultural land without prior permission.”

The minister advised the mayors of all city corporations to beautify their respective cities and clear all the canals including the 39 major canals in Dhaka to introduce water transport.

The mayors of Dhaka North City Corporation, and Khulna, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Mymensingh City Corporations also participated in the dialogue conducted by Prof. Adil Mohammad Khan, General Secretary of Bangladesh Institute of Planners.

In addition, UNDP’s Assistant Resident Representative, Country Director of Save Children in Bangladesh and President of the Bangladesh Institute of Planners also participated the virtual meeting.
