Ministry’s pragmatic steps increasing health awareness of workers at factory level

DHAKA, May 05, 2021 (BSS)- The field level officials of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) are playing a good role in ensuring health protection of workers at the factory level and increasing health awareness among the workers amid the ongoing pandemic.

Few officials of labor-intensive areas such as Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chattogram said that they (field level officials) are tackling the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in a proper and systemic manner, according to a press release received here today.

Ahmed Belal, Deputy Inspector General of DIFE, Gazipur, said about 31 lakh workers work in various types of factories including garments in Gazipur.

If a large number of workers are not aware of the strict hygiene rules, then it is a big challenge for them to follow the hygiene rules, he said, adding that: “I am getting all kinds of supports from the owners and workers to deal with the ongoing pandemic.”

Local administration is also helping to raise the awareness of the workers, he added.

Deputy Inspector General of Dhaka AKM Salauddin said that the labor-intensive areas of Dhaka are very large, especially in the Ashulia area of Savar, where millions of people work.

“Our inspectors are working tirelessly to raise corona awareness at the factory level,” he added.

Regarding the health awareness of the workers in the factories in Chattogram region, Deputy Inspector General Abdullah Al Shakib Mobarrat said that the workers are sincere in following the health rules at the factory level.

The 23 Special Crisis Management Committees comprising officials, owners and workers’ representatives from the DIFE and the Department of Labor are working tirelessly to keep factory production afloat in the wake of the second wave of corona pandemic.

Committee members are distributing occupational health protection guidelines and awareness-raising posters at the factory level, developed in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In addition, to increase health awareness among the workers, in consultation with the local administration, ‘Miking’ has been arranged in the labor-intensive areas to raise awareness against the coronavirus.
