Fisheries ministry working to ensure animal protein amid pandemic

DHAKA, May 3, 2021 (BSS) – The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has continued the production, transportation, supply and marketing of the fisheries and livestock sector, despite lockdown, to ensure people’s demand for animal protein and nutrition for increasing their immunity amid the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

The field level officers and employees of the Fisheries and Livestock department under the ministry are conducting the activities from time to time, abiding the health guidelines from their respective offices, said a press release here.

Under the direction of the ministry and under the auspices of the Department of Fisheries and Livestock under the Ministry has continued free production, transportation, supply and marketing of poultry (live), cattle, fish fries, fish, meat, milk, eggs, animal products and feed, including materials used in the production of such food or medicines and medical equipments.

Under the direction of the ministry, the officials and employees of the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Livestock are implementing mobile sales activities of fish, meat, milk, eggs and dairy products at fair prices all over the country including the capital Dhaka, said the release.

On the one hand, farmers in the fisheries and livestock sector are able to easily market their produce at fair prices, on the other hand, consumers are able to easily meet their demand for animal meat by purchasing fish, meat, milk, eggs and dairy products as per the demand.

Two separate control rooms have been set up in the Department of Fisheries and Department of Livestock to coordinate mobile sales activities to address problems arising in the production, transportation, supply and marketing of the fisheries and livestock sector.

According to the information received from the control room, on May 2, 720 mobile sales outlets in 64 districts of the country sold a total of 1,19,568 liters of milk, 8,48,801 eggs, 5,934 kgs of beef, 1,140 kgs of mutton, 75,726 kgs of chicken, 161 metric tons of fish and other dairy.

The financial value of the sold products is around Taka 5.30 crore.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim and Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Raunak Mahmud are regularly supervising and directing various activities related to production, transportation, supply and marketing of the fisheries and livestock sector across the country.

Ministry officials are also monitoring field activities around the clock in different districts.
