Maleque for following health rules to prevent 3rd wave of COVID-19

DHAKA, May 2, 2021 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque today reiterated his call to follow health rules strictly to combat the third wave of coronavirus as the country is witnessing a sharp rise in Covid-19 infections from early March this year.

“We have successfully handled the first wave of COVID-19…. the country is facing the second wave of the virus due to negligence of health code as well as rampant movement of the people,” he told a function at Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) here, an official release said.

Secretary of Health Service Division Lokman Hossain Mian, Secretary of Health Education Division Md Ali Nur, Chairman of Community Clinic Prof Dr. Ali Syed Modasser, Awami League health affairs secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana, President of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin and President of Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad (SWACHIP) Dr Iqbal Arsenal, among others, were present at the function with DGHS Director General Prof Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam in the chair.

DGHS ADG Prof Dr Nasima Sultana presented the keynote paper at the programme.

The health minister warned repetition of negligence towards following health rules may invite a third wave of coronavirus. “So, we all have to be careful for maintaining health codes to halt the spread of the deadly virus,” he added .

Referring to neighboring country India’s devastating second wave of coronavirus, Maleque urged all relevant organizations to be alert to prevent entrance of Indian variant for halting rapid transmission of the virus in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh today (May 2) reported 1,359 COVID-19 cases while the coronavirus claimed overnight 69 lives.

The beginning of the current year witnessed a drastic fall of coronavirus cases in the country but the trend lasted for only two months — 21,629 cases were detected in January and 11,077 in February.

After the drastic fall of COVID-19 confirmed cases, the country witnessed a sharp increase of infection as 65,079 cases were reported in March, 2021 and 1,47,837 cases in April.
