Covid-19 death toll reaches 350 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, May 1, 2021 (BSS) – The coronavirus (COVID-19) infection related death toll reached 350 with two more deaths reported from Dinajpur district on Friday in the division.

Health officials said the Covid-19 infection rate continues rising amid a declining recovery rate and a rising casualty rate during the last more than one month in the division.

“A total of 30 infected patients died from April 10 to April 30 last, the highest number in 21 since the outbreak of the pandemic in the division,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS today.

The district-wise break-up of the total fatalities now stands at 80 in Rangpur, 126 in Dinajpur, 37 in Thakurgaon, 35 in Nilphamari, 18 in Kurigram, 20 in Panchagarh, 21 in Gaibandha and 13 in Lalmonirhat.

The average casualty rate currently stands at 1.95 percent in the division.

Earlier, the monthly numbers of casualties were 11 between March 11 and April 11, three between February 11 and March 11 and six between January 11 and February 11 last in the division.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Ahad Ali said the number of Covid-19 cases also rose to 17,978 as 26 more patients were reported after testing 188 samples at the infection rate of 13.83 percent on Friday in the division.

Since the beginning, a total of 1,25,527 collected samples of all eight districts in the division were tested till Friday, and of them, 17,978 people were found COVID-19 positive with an average infection rate of 14.32 percent.

The district-wise break-up of 17,978 patients now stands at 4,683 in Rangpur, 824 in Panchagarh, 1,529 in Nilphamari, 1,044 in Lalmonirhat, 1,154 in Kurigram, 1,641 in Thakurgaon, 5,393 in Dinajpur and 1,710 in Gaibandha of the division.

Meanwhile, the number of recovered Covid-19 patients rose to 16,643 with the healing of 23 more infected people on Friday in the division.

“The average recovery rate currently stands at 92.57 percent in the division where the recovery rate crossed the 97 percent mark some two months ago,” he said.

“Among the 16,643 recovered patients, 4,248 of Rangpur, 796 of Panchagarh, 1,458 of Nilphamari, 995 of Lalmonirhat, 1,019 of Kurigram, 1,520 of Thakurgaon, 4,995 of Dinajpur and 1,612 of Gaibandha districts,” Dr Ali said.

Of the total 17,978 infected patients, 83 are undergoing treatments at isolation units, including 18 critically sick patients at ICU beds, after recovery of 16,643 patients and 350 deaths while 939 remaining in home isolations across the division.

“Meanwhile, the number of citizens who got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine remained steady at 5,96,952 since April 26 last, and among them, 2,51,734 got the second dose of the jab till Thursday in the division,” Dr Ali added.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu urged people to abide by the health directives for containing the rising infection rate of the deadly virus.
