2 killed, 3 injured in Ctg oil tanker fire

CHATTOGRAM, April 29, 2021 (BSS) – At least two people were killed and three others injured in a fire that broke out in an oil tanker on the Karnaphuli River of the district port this morning.

The fire broke out at the engine room of inland oil tanker “MT Iravati 1” at the Super Petro Chemical Jetty of the port at around 6.30 am, said Omar Faruk, Secretary of Chattogram Port Authority (CPA).

On information, three rescue vessels- two from Chattogram port and one tug boat from the Navy and four fire fighting units from Agrabad and Korean EPZ rushed to the spot and doused the flame after two hours of hectic efforts at 9 am.

The Port official said the tanker carrying 1,200 tons of goods from Ashuganj anchored the jetty in the morning.

Later, the rescued teams recovered two dead bodies whose identities could not be known till filing the report, he added.

They also rescued three crew members Abu Sufian, 47, Sahabuddin, 60, and Monir Hossain, 34, from the spot and they were sent to the burn unit of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

CMCH sources said the condition of injured crew Abu Sufian and Sahabuddin was critical.
