MITHAMOIN(KISHORGANJ), April 25, 2021 (BSS) – Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque today said the government is planning to introduce short duration variety of rice in the haor areas as paddy production in the haor areas in most of the cases falls in major risk every year due to flash flood.

“As flash floods ultimately arrive during late April causeshuge risk to the boro crop in the haor areas, so we are working to reduce this risk. Importance has been given to introduce high yielding rice variety which would be harvested minimum 15-20 days ago before the flash flood,”he said.

The minister made this comments while addressing a’Boro Rice Harvest Festival’ at Mithamoin upazila in Kishorganj district.

Mithamoin upazila administration and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) jointly organized the programme.

Only boro crop is a major crop which is being produced in the vast tract of land in the haor areas, he said, adding that “So we have a plan to introduce short duration rice variety like BRRI Dhan 89 and BRRI Dhan 92 as these early varieties would help to reduce crop loss in haor areas.”
Different types of farm machineries including combine harvester and reaper are also being distributed among the haor area farmers to complete boro harvest quickly in the region.

Dr Razzaque said establishment of a regional research centre of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) is underway in the Haor area for innovating the rice variety which is suitable for the region.

Chaired by Kishorganj deputy commissioner Mohammad Shamim Alam, the programme also was addressed, among others, by local lawmaker and son of President M Abdul Hamid Rejwan Ahmed Towfique, Nur Mohammad MP, Senior Agriculture Secretary M Mesbahul Islam, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) Chairman Dr Amitabh Sarker, Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE)’s Director General (DG) M Asadullah, BRRI’s DG Dr Shahjahan Kabir, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI)’s DG Dr Nazirul Islam, District Council Chairman Zillur Rahman and Krishak League central executive committee vice president Shakhawat Hossen Sweet.
