Boro output likely to cross target: Razzaque

DHAKA, April 22, 2021 (BSS) – Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque today said the country’s boro production is likely to increase by 10 lakh tonnes compare to the production in the last year while this year’s boro output target has been set at 2.05 crore tonnes.

“Although the target of boro cultivation this year was on 48,05200 hectares of land, it exceeded 48,83760 hectares,” said the minister while addressing online a review meeting on annual development programme (ADP) implementation here.

Dr Razzaque said country’s boro cultivation target has exceeded by 1.20 lakh hectares of land compare to the last year, and hybrid cultivation has also been raised by nearly 3 lakh tonnes from the last year.

“So, we are hopeful that the current boro production will rise by 9-10 lakh tonnes compared to the production witnessed in the last year which was around 1,96,000,00 tonnes,” he told the function.

The government has made utmost efforts for raising rice production this year as more land has been brought under cultivation and incentive of Taka 76 crore has been given as seed assistance for hybrid cultivation.

Even agricultural extension officials have motivated the farmers to cultivate new hybrid rice varieties and provided technological support to this end amid the coronavirus pandemic.

DAE statistics show that the boro crop has been cultivated on 9,46,534 hectares of land in seven haor districts like Kishorganj, Netrokona, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Sylhet, Hobiganj and Brahmanbaria while it is only 4,51,770 hectares exclusively in the haor areas.

The total ADP allocation for 82 projects in current 2020-21 fiscal was Taka 2,300 crore and ADP implementation progress till March was over 49 percent.

Senior agriculture ministry officials, different agency chiefs and project directors, among others, attended the online meeting. Senior Secretary of the Agriculture Ministry M Meshbahul Islam moderated the programme.
