Rahul Gandhi, other Indian politicians tested Covid-19 positive

NEW DELHI, April 20, 2021 (BSS) – A number of front ranking Indian politicians, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, have been tested coronavirus positive.

Rahul Gandhi has been tested positive for Covid-19 with mild symptoms and is staying in home isolation, according to party sources.

“After experiencing mild symptoms, I’ve just tested positive for COVID. All those who’ve been in contact with me recently, please follow all safety protocols and stay safe,” Rahul Gandhi, 50, tweeted today.

According to party sources, the Congress leader is still in home isolation as advised by his doctor.

He has reportedly not met with his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the last 12 days. He hasn’t met with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra either in five days, say his aides. He also cancelled his scheduled programme in West Bengal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished early recovery of Rahul Gandhi, a Lok Sabha MP and former president of Indian Congress. “I pray for the good health and quick recovery of Lok Sabha MP Shri Rahul Gandhi,” Modi tweeted today.

Another top Congress leader and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was admitted to hospital yesterday with high fever. The 88-year-old later tested positive for Covid. He has received two doses of Covaxin and was, according to sources, hospitalised as “a matter of precaution”.

According to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, the condition of Manmohan Singh is now stable as the best possible care is being provided to him.

“Followed up on Dr Manmohan Singh Ji’s health with the medical team attending to him at AIIMS, Delhi. His condition is stable. We all pray for his quick recovery,” Harsh Vardhan tweeted.

Besides, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, among others, tested Covid-19 positive.

However, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal remains in home isolation and his wife was also tested Covid-19 positive.

The India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases climbed to 1,53,21,089 with 2,59,170 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day while active cases surpassed the 20-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday. The death toll increased to 1,80,530 with a record 1,761 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
