DHAKA, July 19, 2018 (BSS) – State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki today said women are contributing to the challenging profession of journalism with their competence and skills.
She was speaking as the chief guest at a function to award female journalists for their reports on violence and sexual abuse against women and girls at the National Press Club here.
With National Press Club General Secretary Farida Yasmin in a chair, the function was jointly organized by Women Journalists Network Bangladesh (WJNB) and Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS) in association with South Asia Women’s Fund (SAWF).
“Women are winning different awards including gold medals and taking part in various competitions abroad… Thus our country is now moving ahead with the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” Chumki said on the occasion.
Discussing about women’s contribution to agriculture, she said that the country has now become self-reliant in food and the poverty rate has decreased.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Director and Chief Editor Abul Kalam Azad also spoke on the occasion as the special guest.
Stressing on the importance of development journalism, Abul Kalam Azad said “The programmes that the incumbent government is implementing for the welfare of women and children will have to be projected by the media workers.”
“Media workers have a big role in building a non-communal, peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh,” he added.
The function was moderated by WJNB Secretary General Angur Nahar Monty while NUS Executive Director Dr Afroja Parvin presented a keynote paper on the project’s objectives.
