Lockdown’s impact fall on country’s sports arena
DHAKA, April 14, 2021 (BSS) – The impact of the lockdown has been felt in the country’s sports arena as almost all the sports federations have postponed or deferred their sporting activities due to week-long countrywide strict lockdown that has begun from today.
The number of infected patients have increased in the recent time along with the highest number of new deaths which has been recorded everyday that forced the government to opt lockdown to curb the surge of COVID-19.
In this circumstances, the sports federations have no option but to postpone or defer their sporting activities until the situation improves.
The Bangladesh Football Federation already deferred the second leg of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the second leg of Bangladesh Champions League (BCL) and postponed the third division football league.
The second-leg of BPL, BCL, 3rd Division league and the women’s football league, which started on March 31 last, will likely resume one week after the lockdown ends.
The Bangladesh Hockey Federation acting general secretary Mohammad Yousuf said they have no schedule during this Ramadan but they have plans to start the district hockey competition after the Eid ul-Fitr.
However, the archers are passing busy time amidst lockdown as they are taking part in a three-day qualification trial which is being held at the archery training center of Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master Stadium in Tongi.
The Bangladesh Archery Federation is conducting the trial to pick the squad for two international tournaments — Archery World Cup in Switzerland in May and Olympic Qualifying tournament in France in June. The trial will end tomorrow, said the federation’s general secretary Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapal.
