Ex DUCSU social services sect.Akhtar placed on 2-day remand

DHAKA, Apr 14, 2021 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today granted a two-day remand to Akhter Hossain, a former social service secretary of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and president of the DU branch of the Student Rights Council, for alleged snatching away an accused from police custody while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital.

Akhtar was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court today. After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid granted him a two-day remand when police placed a petition for seven days remand for proper investigation of the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station.

Earlier, he was arrested from Shahbagh police station area on Tuesday night.

According to the case, the Chhatro O Jubo Odhikar Parishad staged demonstration protesting at Motijheel on March 25 to oppose Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh.

As the students and Police locked in a series of clashes police arrested a man identified as Abul Kalam Azad.

When the detainee was taken to Dhaka Medical College for treatment, the Chhatro O Jubo Odhikar Parishad activists snatched him from the police custody and ran away.

Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Raihan Kabir filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station on the same day.

A total of 19 people including Akhtar were charged in the case.

Other accused of the case are- Acting Convener of Chhatro Odhikar Parishad Rashed Khan, Joint Convener Faruk Hasan, Former President of DU Branch Bin Yamin Mollah, incumbent President and Former Social Services Secretary of DUCSU Akhtar Hossain, General Secretary of DU Branch Akram Hossain, Central Joint Convener Mashiur Rahman and convener of Jubo Odhikar Parishad Ataullah Sohrab.
