DHAKA, April 9, 2021 (BSS)—Varendra North Zone and Jahangirabad Central Zone will vie for the prestigious gold medal of the Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games cricket event tomorrow at the Abdur Rab Serniabat Stadium (ARSS) in Barishal.

The curtain of the Games will be closed once the battle for the gold will be completed. The 50-over match starts at 9 AM.

Both Varendra and Jahangirabad won two matches in the group phase to make them available for the final clash. The other two teams—Chattola East Zone and Chandrodip South Zone won one match apiece but the former finished third to attain the bronze medal, based on the better run rate. While Chattola’s run rate is -0.177, Chandrodip’s run rate is -1.454.

However in the final game, the upper-hand will be with Jahangirabad who beat Varendra by three wickets in the group phase match. Varendra’s defeat in that match came after they bundled out Chandrodip for only 26 runs to secure a 211-run victory. So that was a little bit stunning result.

Varendra thereafter recorded a 36-run victory over Chattola East Zone to seal the final spot.

Jahangirabad’s start was not as emphatic as Varendra as they lost the first game to Chattola East Zone by 63 runs. But then they made a huge turnaround, sealing two straight victories—a three-wicket win against Varendra and a 40-run victory over Chandrodip—which helped them move to the final.

So while it will be a revenge mission for Varendra along with clinching the gold, for Jahangirabad, it’s a mission to complete a hat-trick win, that could give them the gold.

Earlier in female’s cricket event, Salma Khatun-led Bangladesh Blue won the gold after winning three matches including the final in a row. Bangladesh Green acquired silver while Bangladesh Red got the bronze.
