Strict action if anyone found involved in hampering Hilsa resources: Rezaul

DHAKA, April 5, 2021 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim today said that strict action will be taken against those who would be involved hampering the development of Hilsa resources in the country.

“We will take strict action if anybody is found involved in hampering Hilsa resources,” he said.

He said this while speaking at the inaugural function of Jatka Conservation Week as the chief guest virtually from his official residence on Bailey Road in the capital, said a press release.

Secretary of the ministry Raunak Mahmud presided over the programme.

Additional Secretary Shyamal Chandra Karmakar, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Kazi Shams Afroz and Director General of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute Yahya Mahmud spoke, among others.

Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Shariatpur, Chandpur and Laxmipur districts, representatives of Cabinet Division, Public Safety Department, Ministry of Shipping, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, Naval Police, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Bangladesh Coast Guard, RAB and Fishermen’s Cooperative Societies and concerned Divisional and District Fisheries Officers of the Fisheries Department participated in the virtual meeting.

“We all have a responsibility to protect the fishery resources of the country, but some people are working behind the scene in illegal Jatka extraction,” Rezaul said.

“The trawlers found in the illegal fishing are not of ordinary fishermen, but of some rich unscrupulous people, who prevent the growth of nutritious fish hilsa,” he added.

“Sometimes the mother hilsa cannot lay eggs safely due to the emission of toxic substances, illegal sand extraction, thus dishonest people from different sectors are involved in various harmful roles ” said the minister.

“Hilsa sanctuaries have been established to stop these and monitoring cameras have been installed,” he said.

“The existing problems in the protection of hilsa resources will be solved through the recent projects taken for the development and management of hilsa resources,” he said.

After inaugurating the Jatka Conservation Week 2021, the minister hoped that it would be celebrated successfully and fruitfully.
