JS adopts obituary reference

SANGSAD BHABAN, April 01,2021 (BSS) – The 11th Jatiya Sangsad on the first day of its 12th session today unanimously adopted an obituary reference on a number of distinguished personalities, including a sitting ruling party lawmaker, former lawmakers, prime minister’s advisor and other noted personalities.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the obituary references separately with brief resumes on those who died since prorogation of the 11th session of the parliament.

The Speaker while moving the references said the House expresses its deep shock at the deaths of sitting parliament member of Sylhet-3 Mahmudus Samad Chowdhury, Political Advisor to the Prime Minister Hossen Towfiq Imam, ex-state minister and lawmaker Mohammad Aman Ullah, former lawmaker Tuabur Rahman, ex-MP Abdul Majid Mondol, ex-MP Munsur Ahmed and former Prime Minister and lawmaker Barrister Moudud Ahmed.

The house also condoles the death of noted editor and publisher of Bengali daily Janakantha Atiqullah Khan Masud who is also a veteran freedom fighter, veteran freedom fighter Jainul Haq Sikder, Language veteran Ali Taher Majumder, noted columnist Syed Abul Moksud and senior journalist Shin Reza Noor, Awami League Advisory council member and former president of Dhaka city south unit of Awami League Abul Hasnat, former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Khondoker Ibrahim Khaled, Labour and Appeal Tribunal chairman, former justice of the High Court division and former law secretary Justice Mohammad Abdul Hye, Jahanara Chwodhury, mother of Sunamganj-5 lawmaker Muhibur Rahman Manik, Mahamuda Begum, wife of Prime Minister’s personal physician Professor Dr ABM Abdullah, noted actor ATM Shamsuzzaman, veteran freedom fighter Mujibur Rahman Dilu and Notre dame College former Principal Father JS Pisotho.

Dr Shirin Sharmin also expressed deep shock at the death of doctors, nurses, members of law enforcement agencies, political leaders, media personnel, businessmen, elite personalities and employees of different public and private organizations due to the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides, the Speaker expressed deep shock at the death of 17 people who were killed in an accident at Katakhali in Rajshahi and other accidental deaths at home and abroad.

Earlier, discussion was also held in the parliament on the life and works of deceased parliamentarian Mahmudus Samad Chowdhury.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, Land Minister Enamul Haque, ruling party lawmakers Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Nurul Islam Nahid, Abdus Shahid, Mohammad Faruque Khan, Nesar Ahmed, Jatiya Party chief whip Moshiur Rahman Ranga, Pir Fazlur Rahman and BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid also took part in the discussion.

They conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved families and prayed for the lasting peace of the departed souls.

The lawmakers also observed a one-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls. Later, a munajat was offered by Deputy Speaker Fazley Rabbi Miah seeking eternal peace of the departed souls.

As a mark of respect to the death of the sitting member Mahmudus Samad Chowdhury, after adoption of the obituary reference and munajat, the Speaker adjourned the sitting of the house at 12:19 pm to resume it again on April 3 at 11am.
