SC stays Erfan Selim’s bail in assault case

DHAKA, March 28, 2021 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today stayed for four weeks a High Court order that had granted bail to suspended Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) ward-30 councilor Erfan Salim in a case filed for allegedly assaulting an officer of Bangladesh Navy last year.

Justice Obaidul Hassan of the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court passed the order after holding hearing on a state plea to stay his bail.

Additional Attorney General Sheikh Md Morshed argued for the plea, while Advocate Sayed Ahmed Raza took part in the hearing for Erfan Selim.

The High Court on March 18 had granted bail to Erfan Salim in the case.

A High Court division virtual bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Badruzzaman had passed the order, declaring absolute a rule it had issued earlier in this regard.

The High Court on January 27 issued the rule, asking authorities concerned to explain in two weeks as to why it shall not grant bail to Erfan Salim in the case.

Erfan, son of lawmaker Haji Md Selim, and his men allegedly assaulted Lt Wasif Ahmad Khan in the capital’s Kalabagan signal area on October 25, 2020 evening.

The navy officer filed the case against Erfan, his bodyguard Md Zahid, protocol officer AB Siddique Dipu, driver Mizanur Rahman and 2/3 unidentified persons.

Erfan, earlier, filed the plea for bail with Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court which was eventually rejected on December 27. Later, he filed the bail plea with the High Court.
