Independence Day celebrations turn Rangpur into festive city

RANGPUR, March 26, 2021 (BSS) – The daylong celebrations of the Golden
Jubilee of Independence and National Day-2021 through programmes factually
turned Rangpur into a city of festivity and jubilation today.

People from all walks of life participated in celebrations of the Golden
Jubilee of Independence that bears a special significance this year alongside
celebration of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman.

The celebrations began with heralding 50 gun salutes at ‘Swadhinota
Smritistambha Arjan’ at zero hours today.

With the sunrise, floral wreaths were placed at ‘Swadhinota Smritistambha
Arjan’, Central Shaheed Minar and ‘Shaheed Muktijoddha Smritistambha’ and
mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the city.

Divisional Commissioner Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan, Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar
Rahman Mostafa, Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range Police Devdas
Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud,
Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan, Police Super Biplob Kumar Sarker and
District Council Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom first placed wreaths at
these places.

Later, President of district Awami League (AL) Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, its
General Secretary Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju, President of city AL Shafiur
Rahman Shafi, its General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal and leaders of AL’s
associate bodies and other political parties, freedom fighters, heads of
government departments and educational institutions, business bodies, civil
society members, professionals and commoners placed wreaths.

The national flag was hoisted atop all government, semi-government, private
and public buildings, educational institutions and other establishments with
the sunrise.

Divisional Commissioner Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan with high officials
ceremonially hoisted the national flag amid rendering of the National Anthem
at Rangpur Stadium at 8 am. Later, the Divisional Commissioner with high
officials took salute of the March Pasts of freedom fighters, police, Ansar
and VDP, BNCC, fire service and civil defense personnel, jail guards, scouts,
girls in scouts, students and children and witnessed colourful displays
there.

Drawing competitions for children on the War of Liberation, charity
football matches, sports competitions, screening of documentary films of the
War of Liberation, blood donation camp and cultural functions were arranged.

The main streets and roadside islands were decorated with the national
flag, posters and miniatures and the government, semi-government and private
buildings illuminated in the city.

Freedom fighters, family members and relatives of martyred freedom fighters
were accorded receptions at Town Hall auditorium in the city.

A special discussion on the War of Liberation and independence for women
was arranged at Government Girls’ High School premises.

Improved diets were served to the inmates of hospitals, jails, vagabond
centers, Shishu Paribar and orphanages.

Special munajats and prayers were offered at mosques, temples, pagodas,
churches and other places of worship seeking eternal peace for departed souls
of martyrs of the War of Liberation and continuous peace, progress and
development of the nation.

Rangpur Kendra of Bangladesh Betar aired special programmes and local
dailies and online newspapers published special supplements glorifying the
importance and dignity of the Golden Jubilee of Independence.

The main discussion was arranged at the Central Shaheed Minar premises
followed by a prize distribution ceremony, a fire-cracker firing show and
cultural functions.

The Divisional Commissioner attended the discussion and distributed prizes
among winners of different competitions as the chief guest with the Deputy
Commissioner in the chair.

Rangpur City Corporation, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, different
political parties and organisations, Begum Rokeya University, other
educational institutions and organisations celebrated the occasion.
