Community support needed for transgender social integration

RAJSHAHI, March 26, 2021 (BSS) – Community support together with integrated efforts of all the government and non-government organizations concerned can be the best ways of social and family integration of the transgender people.

Because they are the integral parts of the society, the third gender people deserve all the fundamental rights including health, education, habitat and legal ones for their survival. Some high officials and think tanks came up with the observations while addressing a gathering of the transgender people at Simante Obokash Hall Room in Rajshahi city on Thursday.

Diner Alo Hijra Sangha (DAHS), a non-government development organization working for the welfare of the socially excluded people, hosted the event under the project titled “Women’s Voice and Leadership Bangladesh”.

Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Abu Kalam Siddique addressed the meeting with DAHS President Miss Mohona in the chair.

RMP Additional Commissioner Mazid Ali, Deputy Commissioner Sazid Hossain and Additional Deputy Commissioner Ruhul Quddus, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and Businessmen Leader Sekender Ali also spoke.

Coordinator of the project Afsana Tanjum gave a salient feature of the project along with its aims, objectives and implementation strategy during her concept paper presentation in the meeting. She said the project is being implemented in association with Manusher Jonno Foundation and Global Affairs Canada for improving living and livelihood condition of 1,200 transgender people.

In his remarks, RMP Commissioner Kalam Siddique said the present government has been implementing diversified programmes for mainstreaming the transgender people and Bangladesh Police has been involved in the development process.

The society, as a whole and the police in particular, should come forward with a positive attitude toward the people for their coexistence in society.

Commissioner Kalam Siddique pointed out that the members of the transgender community are always subjected to negligence and repression in every sphere of life including family and society.

Police have been working for ensuring fundamental rights especially the health, social and legal of the socially excluded people and the field level policemen were given instruction to this end.

He, however, said integrated efforts are very important to supplement the government endeavor of mainstreaming the transgender people.
