DHAKA, March 23, 2021 (BSS) – State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said use of technology and green energy will enhance long term sustainable growth of industries and factories.

“Use of environment friendly energy will advance the garment industry in global competition,” he said this while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop titled “Scaling Up Net Metered Rooftop Solar on Knitwear Industry” virtually. Sustainable And Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) organized the workshop with its chairman Mohammad Alauddin in the chair.

Nasrul Hamid said leaders of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) will have to contribute more to promote green technology in line with global climate change.

“Electricity will reach all parts of the country by the end of this year. Arrangements are being taken to install mini grids, solar home systems at remote areas to supply power through submarine cables,” he said.

Electricity generation by using solar technology through net metering method in industrial establishments could be a good investment, the state minister said. “Through this initiative it is possible to reduce electricity bills and establish Green Industry,” he added.

According to the Renewable Energy Policy-2018, the target is to generate 10 per cent of electricity from renewable sources.

“To meet the goal, among other activities, the Net Metering Guidelines were formulated by the power division in July 2018 for expansion of rooftop solar in the net metering system, which was revised in November 2019 and included the OPEX model,” Nasrul said.

Following the guidelines, he said consumers can supply surplus power to the national grid by installing rooftop solar systems after using their required electricity.

It reduces electricity consumption, on the other hand, carbon dioxide emissions are significantly reduced. As a result, installing rooftop solar systems in the garment and knitwear industry through net metering system will increase the Green Credential of the sector, Nasrul added.

Chairman of Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council Zakia Sultana and first vice president of BKMEA Mohammad Hatem joined the workshop.
