Tofail urges buyers to increase RMG price

DHAKA, July 17, 2018 (BSS) – Urging the buyers to increase the price of Bangladeshi readymade garments (RMG), Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today said the price of RMG items was not increased in the international market although work environment was modernized, quality of factory upgraded and labourer’s wage raised.

The minister made the remarks at a discussion meeting titled “Capacity Building of Remediation Coordination Cell (RCC): Sharing Process and Way Forward” as chief guest in a city hotel organized by the ministry of labour and employment.

“Most of the factories in Bangladesh are going to turn into green factories while problems related to child labourers have been eliminated and the Labour Law has been amended and initiatives have been taken to hike wages through commission,” he added.

Mentioning that tenure of Alliance and Accord has already ended, Tofail said they have given six months interim time as per the directives of the High Court and “the time would not be extended further and so they have to go back after completing the timeframe in December.”

“RCC is capable and skilled enough to take over the responsibilities of Alliance and Accord, and ILO would also do the same…,”said the commerce minister.

With state minister for labour M Mujibul Haque in the chair, FBCCI President Shafiul Islam Mahiuddin, US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, labour secretary Afroza Khan and BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.

Mujibul Haque said a total of 2,559 factories identified by the Accord and Alliance have already been renovated fully, and Alliance’s Bangladesh Chief John F Moriarty has announced much earlier that Bangladesh is role model for factory safety.
