World Meteorological Day tomorrow

DHAKA, March 22, 2021 (BSS) – The World Meteorological Day will be observed here tomorrow like other countries in the world commemorating the emergence of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as a specialized agency of the United Nations.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion of the World Meteorological Day.

This year, the day will be observed with particular emphasis on the theme ‘The Ocean, our Climate and Weather’.

President Md Abdul Hamid in his message said, “I welcome the initiative of observing the ‘World Meteorological Day 2021’ in Bangladesh like other countries in the world. The ocean plays an important role in changing the world’s climate and weather systems.”

“I believe the theme of the ‘World Meteorological Day’ this year ‘The Ocean, our Climate and Weather’ is appropriate in this regard. It marks the launch of the United Nation’s Decade (2021-2030) of Ocean Science for Sustainable development. Adequate knowledge about ocean science for better understanding of human-induced climate change is essential. The ocean stores most of the heat energy that is trapped by greenhouse gases and plays a major role in climate change processes,” he added.

Emphasizing on research, the President further said massive ocean observations and research works are indispensable for understanding ocean warming and sea level rising.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the incumbent Awami League government has given utmost importance on the issue of climate change and its challenges.

“Our government has been working relentlessly to deal with the climate change issues and its adverse impact for achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Capacity development of Bangladesh Meteorological Department in providing accurate and timely weather and climate forecasts is underway,” she said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina further said to ensure availability of real time weather forecast for the people BMD Weather App has been launched and a marine weather monitoring system at the maritime boundary of Bangladesh has been set up.

She hoped the celebration of World Meteorological Day will increase awareness on weather and climate among the people of the country.
