WARPO to implement water rules in Barind region

RAJSHAHI, March 21, 2021 (BSS)- Water Resources Planning Organization
(WARPO) has started implementing the Bangladesh Water Rules (BWR) 2018 in
high barind region through decentralizing its activities.

The organization will assess the present context of water saving,
groundwater recharging, drinking water status and surface water irrigation in
the water-stressed area for the first time in the region.

The activities will be executed under the Integrated Water Resource
Management (IWRM) Project.

IWRM project is being implemented in drought affected 39 Union Parishads
and three Pourasavas in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon districts since
2015 with the main thrust of supplying round-the-year potable water to all
people in the targeted area.

The WARPO set up a district level office at Dingadoba area in Rajshahi
city yesterday and will work in collaboration with the Ministry of Water
Resources and financial support of Swiss Agency for Development and
Cooperation- SDC.

WARPO Director General Delwar Hossain accompanied by its Director Alamgir
Hossain, IWRM Project Director Rezaul Karim and Chief Executive Officer of
DASCOH Foundation Akramul Haque were present at the office opening ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Director General Delwar Hossain said the WARPO
activities will cover baseline study to identify the water sources, present
water use scenario and sectoral water demand.

They will conduct the activities in Union and Mouza level of the high
barind region through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) process.

Main focus will be given on identifying the current location and status of
50 observation and monitoring wells and irrigation borehole logs.

He said the local WARPO office will conduct their activities through
coordinating all the government, non-government and local government
organizations concerned.
