Oishee’s leave to appeal plea to seek acquittal granted

DHAKA, March 15, 2021 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today granted a leave to appeal petition of Oishee Rahman to seek acquittal in a case where she has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her parents in 2013.

The apex court also dismissed a state plea against a High Court order that had commuted her death sentence to life imprisonment in 2017.

A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order today.

“As a result of today’s order, Oishee got the chance to appeal against her life imprisonment sentence,” defence counsel Foysal H Khan said.

The High Court (HC) on June 5, 2017, commuted the death sentence of Oishee Rahman to life imprisonment in a case filled over killing her parents in 2013.

The court in its order had said it took into consideration matters like her mental health, drug addiction, no previous criminal record and age.

Dhaka Metropolitan Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 on November 12, 2015, sentenced Oishee to death for killing her parents Mahfuzur Rahman and Swapna Rahman in 2013.

According to the case documents, the convict sedated her parents before
Hacking them to death with a knife.

The court had also sentenced her friend Mizanur Rahman Rony to two-year rigorous imprisonment for giving her shelter after committing the crimes.

On August 16, 2013, police recovered the bodies of Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman of special branch (SB) of police and his wife Swapna Rahman from their Chamelibagh residence in the capital.
