Matin Khasru elected SCBA President, Barrister Kajal Secretary

DHAKA, Mar 13, 2021 (BSS)- Bangladesh Awami League presidium member and former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal were elected President and Secretary respectively of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

The election was conducted by a seven-member election sub-committee led by retired Justice AFM Abdur Rahman who announced the result at around 1.30 pm today.

The candidates of the Awami League backed white panel supported by Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad have got majority by winning 8 posts including the president, while the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikkya Parishad backed blue panel candidates have won 6 posts including the general secretary.

Senior Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru, member of the presidium of the Awami League, backed by Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad, won the post of President bagging 2,968 votes. His nearest rival BNP-backed blue panel candidate Mohammad Fazlur Rahman got 2,132 votes.

Barrister Mohammad Ruhul Quddus (Kajal) of the blue panel got 3,095 votes to win the post of Secretary while his nearest competitor Abdul Alim Mia Jewel of the white panel got 2,204 votes.

The other winners of the white panel are- Muhammad Shafiq Ullah in one of the two posts of vice-president, Barrister Safayet Sultana Rumi in one of the two posts of assistant secretary, Dr Mohammad Iqbal Karim in the post of treasurer and Advocate Mintu Kumar Mandal, Barrister Muntasir Uddin Ahmed, Advocate ABM Shibli Salekin, and Advocate Mahfuzur Rahman Roman in the posts of member of executive committee.

The winners from the blue panel are: Jalal Uddin in one of the two vice-presidential posts, Mahmud Hasan in one of the two posts of assistant secretary, SM Iftekhar Uddin Ahmed, Parveen Kawsar Munni and Redwan Ahmed Ranjib in member posts.

The Supreme Court Bar Association elections (2021-22) were held on 10 and 11 March as a total of 51 candidates vied for 14 posts.

A total of 5,686 voters participated in the election.
