Cultivation of orange-fleshed sweet potato underscored

GAIBANDHA, March 11, 2021 (BSS) – Speakers at a function underscored the
need for cultivating BARI released orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) to get
desired output and reasonable price.

The farmers can be economically benefited through farming the Bangladesh
Agriculture Research Institute released variety of potato which change their
socio-economic condition gradually side by side meeting the demand of
nutrition particularly Vitamin A deficiency, they opined.

The speakers in their speeches said OFSP is a climate-resilient crop which
can be grown on sandy and loamy land and it may be incorporated with local
cropping pattern.

They made the comments while addressing a field day and taste-testing on
BARI released OFSP sweet potato on the ground of Karaibari Community Clinic
under Kamarjani union of Sadar upazila in the district yesterday.

International Potato Centre (CIP) Bangladesh in partnership with Gana
Unnayan Kendra (GUK), a local reputed NGO, arranged the function funded by
UKaid in collaboration with department of agricultural extension and BARI.

Deputy Director of DAE agriculturist Masudur Rahman addressed the function
as the chief guest and Dr. Abdullah Al Mahmud, principal scientific officer of
Onfarm Research Division, spoke at the function as the special guest.

DD of DAE Masudur Rahman in his speeches emphasized for changing food
habit and incorporating it in daily food menu and asked all particularly the
pregnant mothers and the children to take it regularly to enhance the disease
resistance power at their bodies.

Presided over by coordinator of GUK Aftab Hossain, the function was also
addressed among others by specialist agricultural research and development
agriculturist Md. Monower Hossain, project coordinator of GUK-DDBio programme
Mahmud Hassan Rumen and farmer Balika Begum.

Later, the DD formally inaugurated the harvest of OFSP at the land of
farmer Balika Begum.

A large number of agriculture officials, farmers, NGO activists, and
invited guests including journalists were present on the occasion.
