Four Bangladeshi female judges to join UN Peacekeeping Mission
DHAKA, March 7, 2021 (BSS) – For the first time in the history of the country, four female judges from Bangladesh are going to join the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan and Somalia.
Of the four, Munshiganj Joint District and Sessions Judge Afsana Abedin, Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Nowrin Mahbuba, Cox’s Bazar Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jebunnahar Aysha will join the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Jamalpur Joint District and Sessions Judge Lubna Jahan will join United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).
Of them, Afsana and Nowrin will leave here for South Sudan tomorrow. Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar today paid them farewell greetings at the ministry here. Joint secretary Bikash Kumar Saha and other senior officials of the division were present on the occasion, among others.
The four judges would work as justice advisers under the Rule of Law Advisory wing for one year in their host countries.
Terming this one of the milestones for the country’s judiciary, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said participation of Bangladeshi female judges in the UN Peacekeeping Mission is undoubtedly a huge achievement.
“The judges would definitely be able to attain recognition through their ability and efficiency in protecting world peace and human rights,” he hoped.
Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar said the joining of the UN Peacekeeping Mission by two Bangladeshi women judges on International Women’s Day is a huge achievement for the country’s judiciary.
