8 get life term in Alek murder trial

DHAKA, Mar 04, 2021 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced eight people to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the murder of one Alek Miah in capital’s Turag area.

Judge Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 pronounced the judgement, sentencing Alal Uddin, Joynal Abedin, Abdur Rajjak, Abdus Sattar, Abdul Jabbar, Awal Miah alias Awal, Samar Ali and Tamij Uddin to life imprisonment and fined them Taka 10 thousand each, or to suffer six months more behind the bars in default.

The court also sentenced Sohel Rana, Sohrab Miah, Babul Miah and Firoz Miah to 1.5-year imprisonment under separate sections of the act. Accused Barek, Mostafa and Md Omar Ali were acquitted from the case.

The court on February 4 had set today to pronounce the judgement as both the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments in the case on that day.

According to the case documents, the convicts, who had disputes with Alek Miah over land, stormed into latter’s house on June 25, 2008, and started to beat everyone with rod, machetes, hockey sticks, and other sharp weapons.

They took Alek Miah to the rooftop and thrashed him mercilessly. Family members rushed him to local hospital after the attackers left, but the attending doctor declared him dead at the hospital.
