Canals to be recovered from encroachers: LGRD Minister

DHAKA, March 3, 2021 (BSS) – Local Government, Rural Development and
Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister M Tajul Islam has said that all types of
infrastructures built illegally occupying both sides of canals in the capital
will be recovered.

“All illegal occupation on both sides of the canal in the city would be
removed and the works would be done in a joint efforts with the mayors,
councilors, administration and people from all walk of life,” he said.

He said after the inauguration of the Dhaka South City Corporation’s
‘Interim Waste Transfer Centre’, said a press release.

Earlier, he visited Nandipara Bridge (Jirani Khal), Sukh Nagar Bridge
(Khilgaon-Basabo Khal, Jirani Khal, Manda Khal and Segunbagicha Canal
junction), Kamalapur Canal, Shampur Canal and Panthakunj Park Box Culvert.

“The mayors of Dhaka South and North City Corporations have been working on
removing illegal infrastructures including buildings on both sides of canals
in the capital,” he said.

With the initiative of the ministry, a meeting has already been held with
the two mayors to work out a plan of action for beautification of all the
canals in the city, he added.

The minister said his ministry had provided all possible assistance to the
two city corporations to control dengue mosquitoes.

Senior officials of Local Government Department and Dhaka South City
Corporation accompanied Tajul.
