Varendra University VC Prof Tariq passes away

RAJSHAHI, March 3, 2021 (BSS) – Vice-Chancellor of Varendra University Professor Tariq Saiful Islam died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital last night at the age of 73.

He left behind his three sons, a daughter and scores of students, academic
colleagues and host of relatives to mourn his death, said a press release.

Prof Islam had been discharging the duties of VC in Varendra University
since his retirement from RU as a professor in the Department of Economics in
2013.

During his long academic career in the Department of Economics from 1969
to 2013, Prof Islam supervised scores of PhD, M. Phil and post-graduation
research.

Besides, a remarkable number of research papers and books were published
at home and abroad to his credit.

Born in Netrakona district in 1947, Prof Islam obtained MA degree from RU
in 1968. He got PhD degree from Alberta University in Canada in 1982. Prior
to this, he obtained MA degree from Canada’s Waterloo University.

He joined Rajshahi University as lecturer in 1969 and promoted to the post
of professor in 1991. His first namaz-e-janaza was held at Koyerdara Baitul
Awal Ahmadia Mosque at 8:30 and the body was taken to the department of
economics. A large number of teachers and students paid respect to him there.

Meanwhile, RU VC Prof Abdus Sobhan and Pro-VCs Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha and
Prof Chowdhury Jakaria, among many others, expressed deep shock at the death
of Prof Tariq Saiful Islam and conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the
bereaved family.

They also sought for eternal peace of the departed soul.
