Jabbar for using modern technology in building Digital Bangladesh

DHAKA, Feb 28, 2021 (BSS) – Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar today said the main challenge is to adopt modern technology and utilize the human resources in building ‘Digital Bangladesh’.

Highlighting the goals and objectives of ‘Digital Bangladesh’ vision, he said: “Our challenge is to adopt technology and utilize our human resources. If we cannot do so, we will have to face trouble in the future.”

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at the International Conference on Information and Communication Technology for Sustainable Development, organized by Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in the capital.

Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury and BUP Vice Chancellor Major General Md Moshfequr Rahman also attended it, among others, with BUP Faculty of Science and Technology’s Dean Brig Gen Golam Faruk in the chair.

The transformation is needed to build the Digital Bangladesh in line with materializing ‘Sonar Bangla’, Jabber said, adding that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had sowed the seeds of digitalization by gaining the membership of Universal Postal Union (UPU) and setting up a satellite earth station at Betbunia on June 14, 1975.

He said that from 1996 to 2001, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina removed tariffs and VAT on computers and introduced online internet and made internet and computers accessible to the people.

The premier turned the seed of digitization into a sapling by shutting down the monopoly business of mobile phones to make mobiles accessible to the general public, licensing four mobile companies and launching various landmark programmes including launching internet through ‘Viasat technology’, he added.
