National tree plantation campaign to help boost green coverage: Shahab

DHAKA, Feb 25, 2021 (BSS) – The National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2021 will be held this year aiming at encouraging people to plant trees and conserve forest to increase the country’s green coverage.

The theme of the campaign and fair is ‘Mujib Barshe Angikar Kori, Shonar Bangla Gare Tuli’, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin told a preparatory inter-ministerial meeting at the Secretariat here today.

The meeting was arranged ahead of the World Environment Day and Environment Fair 2021 and the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2021, said a ministry press release.

The inaugural ceremony of the World Environment Day and Environment Fair and National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair would be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the city on June 5.

“We will be able to increase the greenery across the country with joint participation of people from all walks of life,” the minister said.

At the inaugural function, cheques will be distributed among the beneficiaries of social forestry, while Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation 2020, Prime Minister’s National Award for Tree Plantation and National Environment Medal 2019 and 2020 will also be distributed among winners, Shahab Uddin.

Saplings are being planted massively across the country to cope with the adverse impacts of climate change, conserve biodiversity and alleviate poverty and create employment, ensure socioeconomic and environmental development, he added.

Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar, Environment Secretary Ziaul Hasan, Additional Secretary (Administration) Mahmud Hasan, Additional Secretary (Development) Ahmed Shamim Al Razi, Additional Secretary (Environmental Pollution Control) Md Moniruzzaman, Director General of the Department of Environment (DoE) Dr AKM Rafique Ahmed and Chief Conservator of Forests Amir Hossain Chowdhury were, among others, present.
