AIIB to provide $ 100m to assist ‘COVID-19 Emergency Response Project

DHAKA,Feb 25,2021(BSS)- A loan agreement of US$ 100 (One hundred) million has been signed on February 19 last between the Bangladesh Government and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to assist in financing the project- ‘COVID-19 Emergency Response and Pandemic Preparedness Project.

Joint Secretary of Economic Relations Division(ERD) Shahriar Kader Siddiky and acting Director General of Investment Operations of AIIB Mr. Rajat Misra signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides, an official handout said here today.

The project has been taken up at the initiative of the Health Services Division and it will be implemented by the Directorate General of Health Services.

The objective of the project is to support the Government of Bangladesh to prevent, detect and respond to the threat posed by COVID- 19 and to strengthen its national systems for public health preparedness.

The project has been approved for implementation in three years at the meeting or the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) held on 05 January 2021.

The loan will be co-financed with the World Bank as a lead co-financier. The loan, by virtue of assistance from the Special Fund Window (SFW) facility of AllB is repayable in 35 years with a grace period of 05 years.
