Sacked cop jailed in graft case

DHAKA, Feb 25, 2021 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced a former sub-inspector of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station to six-year imprisonment in a case lodged for giving false information in wealth statement.

Judge Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka 5th Special Judge Court pronounced the verdict in the presence of sacked police official Abdul Jalil. He was later sent to jail with conviction warrant.

The court sentenced Jalil to three-year imprisonment under section 26 (2) and another three-year imprisonment under section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act.

The court, however, said the two sentences of jail would run concurrently, meaning the convict has to suffer only three years behind bars.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had ordered the convict to submit his wealth statement and Jalil submitted the statement, saying he has properties worth Taka 23.73 lakh. The anti-graft body, however, in its investigation found Jalil’s properties worth Taka 27.70 lakh.

ACC assistant director Asaduzzaman filed the case against Abdul Jalil on November 5, 2017, with capital’s Ramna Police Station. The ACC filed charge-sheet on November 28, 2018, and the court on February 25, 2020, framed charges against Jalil.

The court today came up with its judgement after examining four out of total eight witnesses on different hearing dates.
