Indictment in mountaineer Ratna hit-and-run case April 5

DHAKA, Feb 24, 2021 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today set April 5 to hold hearing on charge framing in a case lodged against microbus driver SM Darus Salam for hitting mountaineer Reshma Nahar Ratna and leaving her to die in capital’s Chandrima Udyan area on August 7, 2020.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Devabrata Biswas passed the order allowing a time plea of the defence.

Salam hit Ratna, who was cycling in the area, with his speedy vehicle and left her to die. Locals rushed her to nearby hospital, where attending doctor declared her dead. Ratna’s brother-in-law later filed the case.

Police on August 18, 2020, arrested one Mohammad Nayeem in the case and a court had placed him on two-day remand. On August 26, 2020, police arrested SM Darus Salam from capital’s Shahjahanpur area and seized his black microbus. He was placed on two-day remand on August 27.

On August 30, Darus Salam gave his statement under section 164, confessing hitting Ratna and fleeing the area.

Investigation officer and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station sub-inspector Md Mobarak Ali on October 5 filed the charge-sheet against Darus Salam and pleaded to acquit Mohammad Nayeem from the case.
