Prof Arefin mourns death of journalist Syed Abul Maksud

DHAKA, Feb 23, 2021 (BSS) – Dhaka University (DU) former Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of journalist, writer, research scholar and civil society figure Syed Abul Maksud.

In a condolence message, he said, Maksud, a devoted journalist, did objective journalism in his entire career and kept himself involved with mass media in different ways even after his retirement as a journalist.

He said the journalists’ community as well as the nation has lost a distinguished civil society figure and a learned person at his death.

Prof Arefin, also chairman of the board of directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), said new generation students of Dhaka University will be benefited by the research oriented book written by Maksud on the history of the university.

He conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

Maksud passed away at a hospital in the capital following sudden illness this evening at the age of 74.

Hailed from Manikganj and on conclusion of education Maksud began his career as a government information official ahead of making his debut in journalism, joining the now-defunct Bangladesh Press International (BPI).

He joined national news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) after the merger of BPI with state-owned BSS in mid 1970s.

A left-leaning, Maksud quit BSS in 2004 to be a freelancer and began to wear monk-like white robes as a protest following the US invasion of Iraq.
