Razzaque urges CGIAR to assist Bangladesh for agricultural dev

DHAKA, Feb 23, 2021 (BSS) – Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque today called upon the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) to increase cooperation in sustainable agricultural development of Bangladesh through innovation of relevant technologies and ideas.

“CGIAR can assist Bangladesh with expanding research, new projects and programmes for agricultural development of the country,” he said.

The minister was speaking at the 7th meeting of the CGIAR Advisory Committee (CAC) as the chief guest at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) auditorium in the capital.

Abdur Razzaque said Bangladesh has achieved incredible success in agricultural development and food production but now it is needed to adopt new research to maintain food security for the ever-growing population and meet other many challenges of the country.

The CGIAR is a combined platform of 15 global organizations working in agricultural research, development and policy formulation, according to a press release received here today.

These international organizations have been taking and implementing various projects for the development of agriculture in Bangladesh, the release added.

Currently, these organizations are implementing 47 projects and programmes in the country.

Senior Agriculture Secretary Md Mesbahul Islam was present there as a special guest with Executive Chairman of BARC and CAC chairman Dr Sheikh Mohammad Bakhtiyar in the chair.

The meeting was also attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Agriculture, Bangladesh representatives of CGIAR, members of CAC and heads of research and extension institutions.
